Three Spiritual Study Programs

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three special spiritual programs for the systematic study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism that are especially suited to the modern world: the General Program, the Foundation Program, and the Teacher Training Program.

The General Program

The General Program provides a basic introduction to Buddhist view, meditation, and practice that is suitable for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. It also includes advanced teachings and practices from both Sutra and Tantra. It is an ideal starting point for those interested to find out more about Buddhism and meditation. Check class schedules in Boston, New Bedford and Providence and feel free to drop-in to any of these classes.

The Foundation Program

The Foundation Program provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddhism through a systematic study of five texts:

The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, based on the commentary
Joyful Path of Good Fortune

Training the Mind, based on the commentaries
Universal Compassion
and Eight Steps to Happiness

The Heart Sutra, based on the commentary Heart of Wisdom

Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, based on the commentary

Teacher Training Program

The Teacher Training Program is intended for people who wish to train as authentic Buddhist Teachers, and also for those who wish to gain a clear insight into Buddha's teachings and deep experience of their practice.

All Resident Teachers of Kadampa Buddhist Centers follow this in-depth program of study and practice. The program involves the study of twelve texts. The five texts of the Foundation Program plus:

Guide to the Middle Way, based on the commentary Ocean of Nectar

Vajrayana Mahamudra, based on the commentary Clear Light of Bliss

The Bodhisattva’s Moral Discipline, based on The Bodhisattva Vow

Offering to the Spiritual Guide, based on the commentaries
Great Treasury of Merit
and Mahamudra Tantra

Vajrayana Tantra, based on the commentary Guide to Dakini Land

Grounds and Paths of Secret Mantra, based on the commentary
Tantric Grounds and Path
s

The Practice of Heruka Body Mandala, based on the commentary
Essence of Vajrayana

In addition to completing the study of these twelve texts, participants are required to observe certain commitments with regard to behavior and way of life, and to complete a number of meditation retreats.

Wheel of Dharma

The Dharma Wheel indicaties that having attained these two uncommon qualities of Buddha, we are able to lead all living beings to permanent liberation from suffering, principally by turning the wheel of Dharma, that is by giving Dharma teachings.
This is our final goal.
